Does Castor Oil Shrink Fibroids?

Some anecdotal posts on TikTok and other social media outlets claim that you can shrink or eliminate your fibroids with castor oil packs. While some suggest using castor oil wraps or packs on the abdomen as a remedy for various health conditions, including fibroids, the effectiveness of these treatments remains controversial. In fact, there is no scientific evidence to support these claims; however, castor oil wraps may help some women alleviate symptoms associated with uterine fibroids.

Uterine fibroids need a blood supply to stay alive, and we know that excess estrogen can help them grow larger. When fibroids become larger, they can exert pressure on other organs and cause inflammation, pain, and discomfort.

Castor Oil is derived from castor seeds and dates back to its use as lamp oil and for beauty purposes in ancient Egypt, although today most castor oil is processed in India.

According to WebMD, castor oil contains an omega-9 fatty acid called ricinoleic acid that has anti-inflammatory benefits and, when applied topically, may help alleviate discomfort from menstrual cramps or joint pain. Using castor oil packs for fibroid symptoms involves soaking a woolen cloth in the oil and applying it to the affected area, which is covered with plastic wrap and topped off with a heat source such as a heating pad or hot water bottle. The suggested treatment time is an hour a day, every day, for best results.

The inflammation and cramping discomfort caused by uterine fibroids may be responsive to topical castor oil, but castor oil packs will not permanently shrink or eliminate fibroids. In addition, the process of using castor oil packs for fibroids is time-consuming and messy.

What Works Better Than Castor Oil To Alleviate Fibroid Symptoms?

Women watch TikTok or read anecdotal accounts of castor oil packs used for fibroids and ask “How long does it take castor oil to shrink fibroids”? The answer is that castor oil does not have the ability to shrink or eliminate fibroids; this is a myth.

What is NOT a myth is that there is an effective treatment for fibroids that does not require the extended use of hormones, drugs, or surgery. Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), also referred to as uterine artery embolization (UAE), is an outpatient treatment that takes about 45 minutes and offers a fast recovery time of about a week. UFE is performed by an interventional radiologist with specialty training focused on this procedure, and there is no surgery involved.

During the procedure, while the patient is under conscious sedation, tiny particles are strategically injected into the blood vessels supplying the fibroids, blocking their lifeline, which causes them to shrink and die permanently. Most women report significant improvements or complete elimination of their symptoms by their third menstrual cycle after the procedure, although some find even more immediate improvements.

It is important to note that UFE should only be performed by a qualified interventional radiologist who is an expert in the procedure and has the track record to demonstrate that expertise. Dr. John Lipman founded the Atlanta Fibroid Center over two decades ago and has helped women all over the world become fibroid-free. With over 10,000 UFE procedures to his credit, he is known as one of the world’s leading UFE experts.

If you are suffering from uterine fibroids, stop trying to manage the symptoms and eliminate their source as naturally as possible through UFE. Contact the Atlanta Fibroid Center to book an appointment with our experienced fibroid specialists Dr. Lipman and Dr. Ermentrout to learn how this short, non-surgical procedure can free you from uterine fibroids and give you back your quality of life!
